"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:1-2
Jesus told us that there was no greater love than to lay down our lives for a friend (John 15:13). After teaching that, He did it, demonstrating His great love for us when He laid down His life for us on the cross. He called us to do the same for Him, to lay down our lives for Him, and for each other.
In Matthew 16:24 told His disciples "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
The gravity of that teaching was not fully realized by the disciples when Jesus was alive. But later when they were filled with the Spirit of God they were strengthened, and most were ultimately martyred for Jesus’ sake, demonstrating their ultimate worship, faith, love and obedience.
Today Western culture has become self-absorbed as no time in world history. Men especially, have in record numbers abandoned their vows first to God, and then their spouses, leaving millions of families fatherless. We now have the first fatherless generation.
Many young men in their teens, twenties and thirties have grown up without fathers. In the classes I’ve taught, as many as 80% did not have a father at home. Some have never met their father.
In Psalm 68:5, God promises to be a father to the fatherless. This offers great hope. The overwhelming majority feel ill-equipped for life. Even if they grew up in the church, many have never been discipled in what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a man of God. Many have never been discipled because the leaders today themselves have not been discipled.
"Jesus – Anatomy of a Godly Man" seeks to rediscover the wisdom and treasure of God’s Word for men. To understand what it means to follow God, by denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily, and offering ourselves a living sacrifices to God. Join us. |
